Sleep was never really on my radar during the beginning of my wellness journey but looking back I realized just how important it is.
Unfortunately we live in a society that praises people for pulling all-nighters to get the job done. “You only slept 2 hours, wow you are so committed to your job.” The problem with this scenario is that sleep is an extremely important part of your self care! We need to start normalizing and encouraging good sleep patterns!
How do you know if you’re lacking in the sleep department? Here are 5 signs you may need to work on your sleep!
You’re Unhappy - Your mood will tell you a whole lot! Now don’t get me wrong so many things affect your mood but if you notice a pattern of decreased mood, increased stress, and having a hard time regulating emotions then you may want to check in with your sleep patterns. While we are sleeping our bodies work to regulate our hormone production which helps balance our mood so if you aren’t sleeping your body can’t do its thing!
You’re Struggling with Weight Loss - Yep, sleep will affect this also! Poor sleep patterns have been linked to higher body fat. When your sleep is thrown off it disrupts the regulation of your appetite which can cause you to feel hungry and then can lead to eating more than you normally would.
You’re in a Fog - We all know that feeling waking up after not sleeping enough. You’re kinda confused and forgetful and well, in a fog! During sleep our brains are working really hard to process memories and learned experiences from the day before.
You’re Getting Sick - Not enough sleep can cause your body to be more susceptible to viruses or bacteria. When we don’t sleep it causes our T-cells to go down and inflammation goes up
Your Workouts Feel Harder - You know that feeling. Something you know you can handle just feels out of reach? Take a look at your sleep! When we don’t get enough your reaction time decreases, so does your mood and your energy!
Do any of these sound like you? I know I can totally relate to these! Next week we are going to visit different strategies to improve your nightly routine!
Happy Saturday! I wanted to hop by and give you this important message for this weekend because I hear a lot of this going around!
Do not punish yourself with exercise. When you get into that mindset you will start resenting working out because you will associate it with something negative rather than all the positive it brings.
I totally get not wanting to lose your progress but it is not going to happen with one meal or in one day or really one weekend!
If you can relate to this I want you to do this...
Each morning when you get up be intentional about how you will show up that day. Will you do your workout? Will you focus on your nutrition? Will you go to the party and have one margarita and then seltzer? Pick your one way to show up and stick to it and let the rest happen. Remember this is for a day, not every single day. One day letting yourself eat outside your plan is going to be ok!
