I always find the summer months the hardest to be consistent. You have parties and picnics and vacations which are all fantastic and you should not miss or have anxiety about and that is something I see so often. People start to panic when they are faced with these harder situations and I totally get it and it is so normal but you can still enjoy all those things and be consistent so let's break it all down and make a plan!
Evaluating
The first thing I would do when faced with one of these is evaluate the event. Am I going to a fun BBQ at a friends house or am I going to walk through a food truck festival? The reason I do this is because my behavior won't be the same at both of these. A BBQ at a friends house is something that will happen more often than a food truck festival right? So I may limit myself a little less there because it is not something that will come around often.
This is also not me telling you to eat until you throw up lol My point is nutrition should be looked at as balance. That is what we are striving for. One day of off track eating is not going to derail all your progress, it's just not. So when placed in a situation like that I would say enjoy yourself. A BBQ at a friends house is a little different. You have a little more control of the food involved and most likely you will be there again!
Make a Plan
If you have been following along with me for a while then you know by now having a plan is the best tool in my tool kit. I always have a plan. That's not to say it always works out that way but the plan is always there. So you are invited to this party, super fun, and you are trying to stay on track with whatever eating habits you've established. The best plan here is to bring something delicious that you want to eat. My suggestion a big salad! They are quick and easy to put together and you can control what goes in it and what you eat. Then at the party load your plate up with salad and maybe some chicken from the grill.
Look for lean protein. Usually when people BBQ there are a few options. Choose the best one for you. Chicken or fish will be your best options here. You could do a burger and add the meat to your salad.
Alcohol
This is always a big one. If you don't drink or don't enjoy drinking than you can skip right on by this section but if this is a concern for you then here is my go to tip!
Remember we are in control of what we bring! My go to is bringing a bottle of sweet white wine and my favorite flavored seltzer. I put a little wine in the cup and then fill the rest with seltzer. I have a yummy refreshing drink and I don't feel like I'm missing out!
Dessert
This is another big one at parties. There are usually so many yummy treats! Fruit is going to be the best option here. I usually bring some fruit to share and some kind of dip to go with it, maybe a peanut butter yogurt dip! You have a delicious option and are still making a great choice!
Happy Saturday! I wanted to hop by and give you this important message for this weekend because I hear a lot of this going around!
Do not punish yourself with exercise. When you get into that mindset you will start resenting working out because you will associate it with something negative rather than all the positive it brings.
I totally get not wanting to lose your progress but it is not going to happen with one meal or in one day or really one weekend!
If you can relate to this I want you to do this...
Each morning when you get up be intentional about how you will show up that day. Will you do your workout? Will you focus on your nutrition? Will you go to the party and have one margarita and then seltzer? Pick your one way to show up and stick to it and let the rest happen. Remember this is for a day, not every single day. One day letting yourself eat outside your plan is going to be ok!
Have fun and make good memories, and please be safe! Uber is a fantastic ...
