In the next few weeks I really want to explore kids nutrition. A lot of times we get comments on how our kids eat. I want to start by saying we are NOWHERE perfect, like seriously not at all lol. My kids nutrition was just one of those things that I really wanted to work on when I was pregnant and it has stuck with us.
I know this topic makes people uncomfortable at times or they get ideas in their head that we are crazy health nuts. While we value good nutrition I just want to remind you that "Donuts" is in my business name lol We eat them, and ice cream, and candy, we go to McDonalds and on the last day of school we eat ice cream for breakfast! We are balanced and that is the key that I want you to remember during this series!
So with all of that being said each week I will be sharing a new tip on how to encourage good nutrition in your children!
BE A ROLE MODEL
Yep you have to eat the broccoli too! Actually not only do you have to eat it you have to talk about eating it and like it lol. Your kids learn from you. To be a good role model for nutrition there are different steps you can take. It's actually not all just about eating broccoli!
1. Slow down at meal times. I know we are all in a rush. I know what you're going to say there was baseball practice and homework needed to get done so we just shoved in food and kept moving. We all have nights like this but we need to slow down meal times! Eating slowly is one of the good skills kids need to learn. It helps them see how food makes them feel and when they need to stop eating or eat more. They learn these skills when they eat more slowly.
2. Eat your meals at the table, with no distractions - That's right at the table, not in front of the TV. Again we want to be able to notice hunger cues. This is learned! It also allows you have a good conversation with your kids and have some family time which I know can sometimes be hard with our crazy schedules. This includes phones also.
3. Be open to new foods! Have conversations about the foods you are eating! When you are open to trying new things your kids will see that. I love to point out when I made a new recipe. I always have a conversation about it at the table. Like this is new asparagus, I added something different to it and I love the way it tastes. I makes new things and try new things so my kids can seem me try. They aren't going to love everything and that is OK but the more you talk about being open to new foods yourself the more they will learn that they should keep trying.
Remember this week was being a role model so honestly a lot of the work here is for you! Having positive conversations about food is key to success here. If you're trying to change how your kids eat be patient. This is going to take some time. Try your best not to get frustrated over their refusal to eat broccoli. Talk about it and try something else, but more on that in the coming weeks!
Happy Saturday! I wanted to hop by and give you this important message for this weekend because I hear a lot of this going around!
Do not punish yourself with exercise. When you get into that mindset you will start resenting working out because you will associate it with something negative rather than all the positive it brings.
I totally get not wanting to lose your progress but it is not going to happen with one meal or in one day or really one weekend!
If you can relate to this I want you to do this...
Each morning when you get up be intentional about how you will show up that day. Will you do your workout? Will you focus on your nutrition? Will you go to the party and have one margarita and then seltzer? Pick your one way to show up and stick to it and let the rest happen. Remember this is for a day, not every single day. One day letting yourself eat outside your plan is going to be ok!
Have fun and make good memories, and please be safe! Uber is a fantastic ...
