Self care is a big topic lately and rightfully so. For a long time we as moms have been expected to hold it all together. We run a house, take care of our family, coordinate schedules, cook, clean, and for many of us work a full time job on top of that.
You can easily see how taking care of ourselves got pushed down the to do list, so far down that for some it doesn’t even make the list. All of this is resulting in a bunch of burnt out moms. We are tired, stressed, overwhelmed and honestly we need help, though we probably won’t admit it!
Carving out time to take care of yourself is an overwhelming task in itself for many women. Which is why when you talk about this topic their go to response is, that sounds great but I don’t have time. We are so overwhelmed with tasks the thought of adding another task is just not doable. But this is never going to change unless we start somewhere.
So in order to start somewhere I wanted to give you a few things you can do with a very busy schedule! I am fully aware that we deserve to have time in our days for ourselves and if you are ready to do that, then fantastic and this list can still be helpful.
So here it goes,
Dear Busy Mom,
I see you. I see you because I was you, and still am. I want you to know you are not alone and you do not have to feel guilty for wanting to take time away from your family to just be by yourself. In fact I encourage you to do this! I know it may seem hard or overwhelming and it is ok to start small. I’ve put together some of my go to self care tips. These are things I started doing when I began this journey!
Find a podcast that is uplifting, or an audiobook, or an actual book. Find something with a positive spin on it and dive in. My favorite place to listen to podcasts or audiobooks is in the car. I have 30 minutes to drive to and from work. That’s 30 minutes of time I can spend listening to something I WANT!
Do a 5 minute brain dump. At night before you go to bed or in the morning right when you wake up carve out 5 minutes. Seriously you can find 5 minutes and if you can’t make it 3 but come on, you can do this. Set a time and just write. Write down anything and everything that comes to mind. Good things, bad things, it doesn’t matter just get it out for that whole 5 minutes. When you’re done, rip it up. Throw out alllllll the pieces. You do not have to save this journal. I don’t want you to hold back on writing things because you are nervous who might see it. So when you’re done, rip it, shred it, hell if you have a fire nearby toss it in!
Wake up a little earlier than needed. I am completely not a morning person so when this was presented to me as an option I wrote it off without even having a second thought but when I was finally desperate to have some time to work on my projects I circled back and honestly I’m so thankful I did. There is something magical about waking up early when the world around you is sleeping. I drink coffee in the quiet and do my own thing. Usually I’m writing posts like this one but sometimes I do yoga or read. It is just my time and it starts my day off in a good way!
Go for a walk. And no I don’t mean with the kids. By yourself, go for a walk. Stick in some air pods, put on your favorite music, or circle back to the podcast/book idea, and give yourself 10 minutes to just be outside and walk. If 10 minutes is too much to handle right now then just walk around the block or start with 5 minutes. Whatever it is, just get it done!
Now before I end this letter I want you to do one more thing for me. I want you to go on your phone and pull up the screen time. Are you sensing where I’m going? Check out how many minutes per day you spend on social media. I’m sure it’s more than you thought. Now spend 10 less minutes a day on social platforms and do something good for you!
Sincerely
A Busy Mom
Happy Saturday! I wanted to hop by and give you this important message for this weekend because I hear a lot of this going around!
Do not punish yourself with exercise. When you get into that mindset you will start resenting working out because you will associate it with something negative rather than all the positive it brings.
I totally get not wanting to lose your progress but it is not going to happen with one meal or in one day or really one weekend!
If you can relate to this I want you to do this...
Each morning when you get up be intentional about how you will show up that day. Will you do your workout? Will you focus on your nutrition? Will you go to the party and have one margarita and then seltzer? Pick your one way to show up and stick to it and let the rest happen. Remember this is for a day, not every single day. One day letting yourself eat outside your plan is going to be ok!
Have fun and make good memories, and please be safe! Uber is a fantastic ...
