This is the time of year where we see all the ads for different weight loss plans. There are tons of them and most of the big ones have great marketing budgets and are really good at selling. While this doesn't mean it isn't effective you have to really make sure that plan will work for you!
We are often pulled in by the promises the plans make. So I wanted to take some time to go through questions you should ask yourself before making a decision!
1. Is the plan promising quick results?
This is an important one. I know quick results are so appealing, I mean who doesn't want to lose 20 pounds in 10 days! But this is a red flag. If you are losing that much weight that quickly you are most likely restricting yourself way too much and it won't be sustainable!
2. Are you required to cut out entire food groups?
Most likely this will be carbs. I know there are a lot of people who love eating low carb or no carb diets. The question you have to ask yourself here is are you willing to do this long term. If the answer is no than this plan is most likely not for you. You can eat carbs and lose weight and be healthy.
3. Is it sustainable?
The lifestyle they are selling, it is something you can see yourself continuing? This is another really big one. Whatever the plan is, it should be something you will continue to do once you've reached your goal. Yes it will look a little different once we hit our goals but the general principals should still apply. For example are you learning good habits from the program that you can continue on with? If the answer is no than you may want to proceed with caution.
We have been told for years that to lose weight you need to be on a "diet" and while it sounds good the actual diets don't teach us how to live once we are done. This results in a vicious cycle. You want to lose weight, you buy into a program, you lose the weight, the program stops, you gain the weight back. The reason here is you aren't learning habits that are sustainable!
Happy Saturday! I wanted to hop by and give you this important message for this weekend because I hear a lot of this going around!
Do not punish yourself with exercise. When you get into that mindset you will start resenting working out because you will associate it with something negative rather than all the positive it brings.
I totally get not wanting to lose your progress but it is not going to happen with one meal or in one day or really one weekend!
If you can relate to this I want you to do this...
Each morning when you get up be intentional about how you will show up that day. Will you do your workout? Will you focus on your nutrition? Will you go to the party and have one margarita and then seltzer? Pick your one way to show up and stick to it and let the rest happen. Remember this is for a day, not every single day. One day letting yourself eat outside your plan is going to be ok!
